USSA Sport Committees

USSA has sport committees for each sport under its jurisdiction to work with staff to develop plans for the development and operation of their respective sports, and to assist the company in the operation of its programs within their respective sports.  Each sport committee is a permanent standing committee.  Each sport committee includes among its members at least the following representatives:  one member who is a member coach in the relevant sport; one member who is an official in the relevant sport; at least twenty percent eligible athlete representatives; the USSA CEO or his/her designated representative(s).  Subject to USSA Board approval, each sport committee establishes its own operational policies and procedures enabling it to conduct its affairs.

Alpine Sport Committee

Organization & Purpose

The Alpine Sport Committee pursuant to USSA Bylaw Article VI (c) will work with the staff of USSA to develop plans, strategies, and policies for submission to the CEO for the development and operations of alpine skiing and to assist USSA in the operation of the alpine skiing programs consistent with FIS regulations, USSA bylaws and The Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sport Act.

The authority and responsibility of the ASC is defined as working with the staff of USSA to develop competition rules, competition calendars, and advancement systems for International and National Level alpine activities.  The committee will work to:

1. Contribute sport expertise leading toward the realization of the vision and mission of USSA in the alpine disciplines.

2. Support the USSA staff in the identification and training of young athletes with the potential to become elite international competitors, development and coordination of programs for competitor development keeping in mind the participation elements and athletic excellence components of the sport and aspects of a national athlete development plan.

3. Enhance public awareness and favorable perception of USSA and competitive alpine programs in all forms and at all levels.

4. Nominate a representative to the USSA board of directors.

Government

The Alpine Sport Committee strives to represent the interests of the alpine ski community within the United States.  Only current USSA members are eligible for election or appointment to the Alpine Sport Committee, subcommittees, technical working groups and task forces.

The Alpine Sport Committee is composed of the following members selected without regard to race, color, religion, sex or national origin.  The vote for representation to the Alpine Sport Committee occurs at the USSA Congress.  Regardless of the number of positions held, each ASC member has one vote.  All representatives are subject to election or re-election every two years by members of the various committees or membership groups, except the Alpine Athlete Representative elected to the USSA Board who serves a three-year term.

-  A chairman, elected by the Alpine Sport Committee every two years, serving a maximum of four two-year terms.
-  The immediate past-chairman of the Alpine Sport Committee.
-  USSA board representative, elected every two years, serving a maximum of four two-year terms.
-  One rules and technical representative, who is the chair of the subcommittee. 
-  One alpine program representative, who is the chair of the subcommittee. 
-  One alpine development & education representative, who is the chair of the subcommittee.
-  Six alpine regional representatives, two from each of the three regions they serve. 
-  One FIS representative, elected by the Alpine Sport Committee members.
-  Four athlete representatives, one serving as athlete representative to the USSA board.
-  The USSA Athletic department vice president, appointed by the USSA president & CEO.
-  The USSA alpine director, appointed by the USSA president & CEO.
-  The alpine competition director, appointed by the USSA president & CEO.
-  One at-large representative may be appointed by the ASC annually.

The Alpine Sport Committee annually confirms at the USSA Congress an executive committee of up to ten members, each with vote.  The executive committee consists of the following representation:

Cross Country Sport Committee

-  To provide support in the identification and training of young cross country athletes with the potential to become elite international competitors.
-  To nominate a representative to the USSA Board of Directors.
-  To support and assist the USSA staff in all programs and aspects of a National athlete development plan for cross country.

Government

U. S. Adaptive Sport Committee (formerly the Disabled Sport Committee)

Organization & Purpose

The U. S. Adaptive Sport Committee pursuant to USSA Bylaw Article VI (c) will work with the staff of the USSA to develop plans, strategies, and policies for submission to the CEO for the development and operations of adaptive skiing and to assist USSA in the operation of the U. S. adpative alpine and cross country skiing programs consistent with FIS regulations, USSA bylaws and the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act.

The committee will assist in the development and supervision of programs for competitor development, improvement in the USSA pipeline, assist with decisions on adaptive skiing issues, and coordinate scheduling of international and national events in conjunction with the USSA staff.

Additionally the committee will work:
-  To contribute sport expertise leading toward the realization of the vision and mission of USSA in the U. S. adaptive ski disciplines.
-  To provide support in the identification and training of athletes with the potential to become elite internationally qualified competitors.
-  To nominate a representative to the USSA board of directors.
-  To enhance public awareness and favorable perception of USSA in all forms and at all levels.
-  To support and assist the USSA professional staff in all programs and aspects of National athlete development plans for both U. S. Adaptive alpine and cross country.

Government

The U. S. Adaptive Sport Committee strives to represent the interests of the U. S. adaptive ski community within the US.  Only current USSA members are eligible for election or appointment to the U. S. Adaptive Sport Committee and all subcommittees, with the exception of the representatives from DS/USA and USABA.

The U. S. Adaptive Sport Committee is composed of the following members, each with one vote, selected without regard to race, color, religion, sex or national origin.  The vote for representation to the USASC occurs at the USSA Congress.  Regardless of the number of positions held, each USASC member has one vote.
-  A chairman, elected by the sport committee membership, two two-year term limit
-  Past chairman
-  The U. S. Adaptive program director
-  National team head coaches from each discipline (alpine and cross country)
-  Two athlete representatives, one from alpine and one from cross country, elected in conjunction with USSA’s Athletes’ Council

-  Development representative
-  One At-large representative who will serve as secretary
-  DS/USA program manager.
Each of the above, except staff positions, is to be held for a period of two years.

The U. S. Adaptive Sport Committee annually selects at the USSA Congress an executive board:

U. S. Adaptive Sport Committee

The U. S. Adaptive Sport Committee is a permanent standing committee within the USSA organization.  The committee works with the USSA U. S. Adaptive sports program director to oversee, develop and guide the sports of U. S. Adaptive ski racing.  In addition, members of the committee work within the sport at the local, divisional and international level, providing service and information to the U. S. adaptive membership consistent with FIS regulations, USSA bylaws and the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act.  Currently, the disciplines recognized by USSA are U. S. Adaptive alpine and U. S. Adaptive cross country (standing classes, mono-ski classes, and visually-impaired classes).

-  To contribute sport expertise leading toward the realization of the vision and mission of USSA in the Freestyle discipline.
-  To provide support in the identification and training of young Freestyle athletes with the potential to become elite international competitors.
-  To nominate a representative to the USSA Board of Directors.
-  Enhance public awareness and favorable perception of USSA and competitive freestyle programs in all forms and at all levels.
-  To support and assist the USSA staff in development and coordination of programs for competitor development keeping in mind the participation elements and athletic excellence components of the sport and aspects of a national athlete development plan.

Government

Freestyle Sport Committee

The Freestyle Sport Committee works in an advisory capacity with the staff of the USSA to develop plans, strategies and policies the development and operations of freestyle skiing and assists the USSA in the operation of the freestyle skiing programs, coordinating programs for competitor development, emphasizing participation elements and athletic excellence components of the sport (i.e., quotas, schedules, etc.).

Freestyle Executive Committee

The FEC has the power to act between FSC meetings in the administration and management of FSC affairs, especially where the interests of the sport require prompt action.  All such actions are reported and presented for approval by the FSC at its next meeting.  The FEC is comprised of six members.

b)   One at-large freestyle representative
c)    The freestyle program director
d)    The freestyle head coach
e)    The freestyle athlete representative to the USSA BOD.
f)     One Ex-Officio member

Freestyle Judicial Committee

The FSC forms a Freestyle Judicial Committee consistent with the provisions of Article IX of the USSA Bylaws.  The Freestyle Judicial Committee is comprised of three members including one athlete representative.  The Freestyle Judicial Committee is responsible for the dispensation of judicial matters arising from protected competitions pursuant to USSA Bylaw Article IX if referred by the USSA Judicial Committee.  The FSC Chairman, consulting with the Executive Committee, nominates a slate of candidates for the Freestyle Judicial Committee.  These candidates are responsible for exercising “due process” for freestyle members in matters of complaints / grievances / appeals arising from cases referred from the USSA Judicial Committee or surfacing as an appeal to a regional action.

The SJNCSC will be composed of the following members, each with one vote, selected without regard to race, color, religion, sex or national origin.  The vote for representation to the SJNCSC will occur at the annual USSA meetings.
-  A chairman, elected by the sport committee every two years, who also serves as the USSA board member
-  National team head coaches, named by their USSA job position, one from each discipline
-  Three athlete representatives, with at least one from each discipline, elected in conjunction with USSA’s Athletes’ Council
-  Up to three members, to be designated/elected by the membership of the standing subcommittees, including:

-  One additional member to be selected from the current USSA divisional chairpersons, who acts as the divisional programs’ representative.

Pursuant to the USSA Bylaw Article VI (c), the USSA Snowboarding Sport Committee (SSC) works with the professional staff of USSA to develop plans, strategies, and policies for submission to the CEO for the development and operations of snowboarding and to assist USSA in the operation of the snowboarding programs.

-  To contribute sport expertise leading toward the realization of the vision and mission of USSA in the snowboarding disciplines.
-  To provide support in the identification and training of young athletes with the potential to become elite internationally qualified competitors.
-  To nominate a representative to the USSA Board of Directors.
-  To support and assist the USSA professional staff in all programs and aspects of a National athlete development plan.

Government

The Snowboarding Sport Committee strives to represent the interests of the snowboarding community within the United States.  Only current USSA members are eligible for election or appointment to the Snowboarding Sport Committee (with the exceptions of the seats for the USASA and Industry) and all subcommittees.

The Snowboarding Sport Committee is composed of the following members, selected without regard to race, color, religion, sex or national origin.  The vote for representation to the Snowboarding Sport Committee occurs at the annual USSA meeting.
-  A chairman, elected by the Sport Committee membership every two years
-  USSA board representative, elected by the Sport Committee every two years
-  National Team Head Coach, named by the USSA job position
-  Two athlete representatives, from different disciplines, appointed by the SSC in conjunction with USSA’s Athletes’ Council
-  One member from each of the seven divisional subcommittees with cumulatively three votes (see note)
-  One subcommittee member from the Rules & Tech Subcommittee
-  One subcommittee member from the Judges Subcommittee
-  One FIS representative
-  One USASA representative
-  One Industry representative.
Each of the above positions is to be held for a period of two years.

(Note:  The seven divisions are represented by a total of three votes distributed as follows:  one vote for the Far West and PNSA division, one for the Intermountain, Rocky and Northern division, and one vote for the Central and Eastern Divisions.  Each of the seven divisions maintains their representative to speak and participate as an active member of the Snowboarding Sport Committee, but share their vote with their respective counterpart.  It is decided amongst the representatives who will vote at Snowboarding Sport Committee meetings.)
